Welcome to the world of Slytherin-themed decor! Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the Harry Potter series or want to add a hint of the wizarding world to your room, these Slytherin accessories will help you elevate your Harry Potter themed space. If you want to see additional pictures, here is how I used them in my own room.
We’ll cover everything from wall art and furniture to lighting and desktop decor – all designed to evoke the darkly glamorous Slytherin aesthetic. Between the lush interiors of the Slytherin Common Room and the dark sophistication of Grimmauld Place, the movies gave us plenty of ideas about creating dark wizard air with everyday objects. These Slytherin accessories will give your room an authentic look, with a dash of magic.
Additionally, I created a longer list of Harry Potter themed accessories, a special list of decor items for Gryffindor fans, and a Slytherin inspired common room recreation.
Buying note: most of the items shown in my room come from estate sales, auctions, and thrift stores. Slytherin families go way back, so many of their accessories were old-fashioned, and can be obtained at a discount. The well-worn look of grand old items also works with the Slytherin aesthetic. Happy thrifting!
1. Black Leather
You can’t do a Slytherin interior without black. Black leather is as Slytherin as it gets. It’s also expensive, so if you are on a budget, try to go with small items, like a footstool. You can also find leather at a lower price at estate sales.
Here is a pretty good chair dupe sold by Wayfair.
2. Trunk
The steamer trunks are essential to Harry Potter themed decor, as wizards have not been able to figure out the four-wheel spinner suitcase yet (to be fair, it took muggles a while, too). Pottery Barn Teen sells nice-looking trunks with Hogwarts House crests for a pretty penny, but you can get a similar size steamer trunk in good condition from an antique store.
3. Skulls
Skulls are an essential decor element for both Slytherin House and the Death Eaters, many of whom came from Slytherin. You can include skulls in the room in multiple capacities, from being part of decorative elements to stand-alone skulls to using art with skulls.
You will find many ideas for these accessories in your local interior decorating stores around Halloween.
4. Candelabra
Both Slytherin Common Room and Grimmauld Place house had intricate decorative candelabras in silver and black colors. They were placed on buffets and dark wood storage pieces, often with art or mirrors behind them.
Here are some additional options for classic candelabras from Wayfair.
5. Antiqued Mirror
The mirrors in Slytherin places play an important role, even though they might not be the most obvious pieces of decor. The designers in the movies antiqued the mirrors so they look like the silver in the back has partially rubbed off.
At the Black’s Grimmauld Place house, the antique mirror sits above a dresser in one of the bedrooms, and there are two mirrors above a desk and buffet in the Slytherin Common Room. The mirrors have substantial wood frames and often are carved intricately.
I created my own DIY antiqued mirror, and you will find detailed instructions and a video here.
The new mirrors are pretty expensive, so hit your thrift store first and look for a thick frame. If the frame has dings and imperfections that need to be covered up, a can of spray paint followed by light sanding with 180-grit paper can do wonders.
6. Brass Lamp
Hogwarts light fixtures are made out of brass and have glass hurricanes, often paired with either glass ball or metal shade. These are iconic lamps and scoring one for your own Harry Potter themed room is a must.
There are not many “dead-on” Hogwarts options on either the new or used lighting market, so you may want to consider lamps with metal shades or task lamps.
7. Magnifying Glass
There is magnifying glass all over Hogwarts, and the Defence Against the Dark Arts room is practically full of them. The wizards clearly like to see the details. Magnifying glass is also made of glass and metal, and both are popular materials for Hogwarts-themed accessories.
Look on Ebay and other online auctions for a vintage standing magnifying glass that you can display in your Slytherin room.
Similar magnifying glasses on Wayfair.
8. Silver Pieces, Goblets in Particular
At Hogwarts, students drink out of silver goblets, and these are generously placed around common rooms. You can find very inexpensive silverplated goblets and other serving pieces at thrift stores, and they only get better as they develop a patina. Very authentic Slytherin look!
These are best purchased used, and if you want to tarnish the silver for a true Slytherin look, you can do it using the egg trick.
9. Horns
Decorative horns were used in the Slytherin common room, placed on top of buffets and desks. Dumbledor has a magnifying glass with a horn handle on his desk. Xenophilius Lovegood had what he thought was a horn of the elusive Erumpent in his house. Horn is a beautiful natural decoration, and it goes well with Slytherin theme.
The horns are available on the used market as well as on sites like Wayfair. There are large horns to be used as statement pieces as well as small horns for desktop decoration.
